Modern technologies open up new opportunities for exploring the world of art and history. Virtual exhibitions allow you to explore Ukraine’s most valuable cultural heritage without leaving home.

We present five unique online exhibitions that are worth visiting.

1. Ukrainian Portrait of the XVII-XX Centuries

“Ukrainian Portraits from the 17th to the 20th Century” — a virtual reconstruction of the legendary 1925 exhibition that introduced the general public for the first time to the diversity and depth of Ukrainian portrait art. The initiative was led by the distinguished researchers Danylo Shcherbakivskyi and Fedor Ernst, and the event itself laid the foundation for further scholarly study of Ukrainian portraiture.

Today, the exhibition has been reborn in digital format thanks to the efforts of the National Art Museum of Ukraine. In the VR space, visitors can see hundreds of portraits that were previously scattered across museums in Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv. Each artwork is not only a piece of artistic canvas but also a living story revealing the images of Ukrainians through the centuries.

This location is not just about viewing paintings but offers a full immersion into the artistic atmosphere of the past. The virtual exhibition allows visitors to experience an event from a century ago in an innovative format, combining historical authenticity with the possibilities of modern technology.

2. VR War Memory Museum “War Up Close”

This emotionally powerful online exhibition tells the story of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. “War Up Close” is a project that uses 360° panoramic views, drone footage, and 3D modeling to show the world the genocide of the Ukrainian nation.

Using modern technology, the project team captured the destruction caused by the aggressor and posted it on Google Maps, social media, and the project’s website. VR headsets and immersive exhibitions presented war crime footage to provide deeper immersion, making this exhibition particularly emotional and relevant.

3. See Chornobyl in VR

This unique VR tour allows visitors to see Pripyat and the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone without any health risks. Visitors can explore abandoned streets, iconic buildings, and historical locations that have become symbols of one of the world’s most significant technological disasters. The online journey “See Chornobyl in VR” helps convey the scale of the tragedy and its consequences for humanity.

This unique historical project offers a detailed look at the first monument to Taras Shevchenko, which was erected in Kharkiv at the request of the Alchevsky family. Through 3D modeling, visitors can see this “illegal” monument in digital format, learn about its history, and understand its significance in Ukrainian culture.

5. Discover Trypillia

This exhibition introduces one of Europe’s oldest civilizations. Using digital reconstruction, the exhibition showcases the lifestyle, art, and architecture of the Trypillians, who lived on the territory of modern Ukraine more than 6,000 years ago. This exhibition helps visitors better understand the uniqueness of this culture and its influence on the development of future civilizations.
