A museum visit with a child is no longer just about quiet halls, standard tours, and constant reminders not to touch anything.

In Ukraine, there are places where children can conduct experiments, enter an aviation hangar, examine ancient animal skeletons, create pysankas, and learn the history of a city through quests.

Our selection includes museums for children that are perfect for family weekends, school holidays, or short trips. Some are more suitable for preschoolers, while others will appeal to schoolchildren and teenagers. But all of them offer something children naturally enjoy: the chance to see things up close, explore, experiment, or create something with their own hands.

Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Science Museum in Kyiv

The Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Science Museum at VDNG is one of the most convenient formats for a child’s first introduction to science. It is an interactive space located in Pavilion No. 23, where exhibits can not only be viewed but also tested in action.

At the museum, children can ride a bicycle with square wheels, see a two-meter hologram, examine a massive crystal, and hold models of the human brain and organs in their hands. Kids will also enjoy “seeing” their own voice, stepping inside a giant shell, walking through a mirrored tunnel with optical illusions, and learning how colors are mixed. One of the most impressive exhibits is the glass ceiling that changes color.

It is best to allocate at least two hours for a visit. Educational programs are available for groups, and families are advised to purchase tickets for a specific time slot in advance.

  • Address: VDNG, Pavilion No. 23, 1 Akademika Hlushkova St.
  • Approximate cost: admission ticket — 300 UAH, ticket with a science show — 400 UAH
  • Recommended age: approximately 5 years and older
  • What children will enjoy: hands-on exhibits, science shows, experiments, interactive activities

Experimentanium Science and Technology Museum in Kyiv

“Experimentanium” is a science and technology museum in Kyiv where children can explore physics, chemistry, optics, acoustics, anatomy, natural phenomena, and modern technologies through practical examples. There is no need to spend long hours listening to theory — the museum’s main idea is to demonstrate how science works in real life.

Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, join guided tours, and attend science shows. Programs include the electric “Tesla Show,” “Cryo Laboratory,” chemical “Reactive Show,” “Kitchen Experiments,” and “Crystalmania.” School groups can also book tours and shows in advance.

This place is ideal for children who enjoy asking questions and immediately seeing the results. You can easily spend several hours here: the ticket remains valid all day, so after a break visitors may return to the exhibition using the same wristband. Children under 14 may only visit when accompanied by adults.

  • Address: 154 Borshchahivska St.
  • Approximate cost: adult ticket — 350 UAH, children aged 3–16 — 320 UAH, children under 3 — free

National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv

The National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a great place for children who enjoy looking at animals, insects, minerals, and ancient remains, as well as learning what Earth looked like millions of years ago. It is the largest natural history museum in Ukraine: across 24 halls, more than 30,000 exhibits present the origin, structure, and evolution of Earth, along with its flora and fauna.

Young visitors are especially fascinated by the paleontological exhibits, skeletons of ancient animals, dioramas, zoological halls, minerals, and everything that can be closely examined. The paleontological exhibition includes skeletons of Neogene and Quaternary mammals such as the deinotherium elephant, cetotherium whale, the primitive aurochs bull, mammoths, and other ancient creatures.

When visiting with preschoolers, it is better to choose a shorter route rather than trying to see all the halls at once. For schoolchildren, visitors can book general or themed tours — the museum offers programs in geology, paleontology, zoology, and botany.

  • Address: 15 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho St.
  • Approximate cost: full ticket — 200 UAH, discounted ticket — 150 UAH

The State Aviation Museum is a great destination for children interested in airplanes, helicopters, machinery, and large vehicles. The museum’s main site at 1 Medova Street is temporarily closed, but visitors are welcome to join guided tours at the training hangar of the Kyiv Aviation Institute.

Inside the hangar, visitors can see airplanes and helicopters, dissected examples of aviation equipment, large aircraft engines, and an exhibition about the early development of aviation in Ukraine. This format is especially suitable for schoolchildren: they can examine the machinery up close, compare its scale, and understand how an aircraft is built.

The museum also accepts school groups by prior arrangement. Tours last approximately 30–40 minutes, making it easy to combine the visit with another family activity during the day. Preschoolers may also enjoy the museum if they are already fascinated by airplanes, but it is best suited for schoolchildren and teenagers.

  • Approximate cost: full ticket — 200 UAH, discounted ticket — 100 UAH

The space is designed as an attraction-style dungeon where visitors learn about the history of pharmacy in Lviv, apothecary legends, authentic pharmaceutical utensils, and inventions created by pharmacists.

For children, the atmosphere is the main attraction. The underground setting, stories about apothecaries, playful elements, and programs for younger and middle school-age children make the museum engaging even for those who usually tire quickly of traditional exhibitions. Families can also book the “Secret Laboratory” workshop for children aged 5–12, where participants create secret messages, “bubbling lava,” magical snakes, and learn about the “Tesla” device.

Tours last about an hour, and groups range from 2 to 25 people. It is best to book in advance, especially if you are planning a children’s program, workshop, or quest.

Children can enjoy several interactive attractions, including the “Eney Starship,” a VR journey through space, and the Mechanoid robot. These activities should be booked in advance, especially if you are planning a one-day trip to Zhytomyr.

Pysanka Painting Museum in Kolomyia

The Pysanka Painting Museum in Kolomyia immediately attracts children with its exterior appearance: the building itself is shaped like a giant pysanka (traditional decorated Easter egg). Inside, visitors can see a collection of pysankas and decorative eggs from Ukraine and other countries — from traditional Hutsul and Pokuttia ornaments to contemporary designs.

Here, it is easy to explain to children that a pysanka is not just festive decoration, but an entire system of symbols, colors, and family traditions. Throughout the year, the museum hosts pysanka painting workshops for both children and adults, as well as a School of Pysanka Art. This makes it possible to combine the visit with a practical activity.

For children, the museum is especially interesting because some programs are designed as adventures. During school tours and quests, children can search for clues in the halls, touch selected objects, turn on a gramophone, examine a mid-20th-century schoolbag, and open a 1912 cash register.

National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine in Kyiv

Pyrohiv is an open-air museum where visitors can see traditional architecture from different regions of Ukraine. The skansen features around 300 examples of folk architecture dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, making it more of a large walk through a traditional Ukrainian village than a classic museum with indoor halls.

Children can more easily imagine how people lived in different parts of Ukraine: what homes looked like, where the stove was located, how grain was milled, how courtyards were arranged, and which household items were used in daily life. The museum also hosts tours, events, and workshops, so a visit can be combined with a practical activity or seasonal program.

Before visiting, it is important to consider the weather and distances: the territory is large, so families with small children may want to choose a shorter route. Children under 12 may only visit when accompanied by adults.

  • Address: 1 Akademika Tronko St.
  • Approximate cost: current ticket prices should be checked before visiting
  • Recommended age: from 4 years old; children under 12 must be accompanied by adults

Pereiaslav National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve in Pereiaslav

The Pereiaslav National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve объединяет many separate museums and landmarks, while some of the most interesting locations for children are situated within the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of the Middle Dnipro Region.

Children may especially enjoy the Bread Museum, the Museum of the Ukrainian Rushnyk, the Museum of the History of Folk Land Transport, the Space Museum, and the open-air museum itself with traditional houses, хозяйственные buildings, and large walking areas.

Before traveling, it is important to check the schedule of each museum separately: different locations have different days off, and some may be temporarily closed.
