Society Oct 26, 2023

Are you planning to clean your home and finally eliminate unnecessary items thoroughly? Instead of throwing away clothes, shoes, books, toys, and accessories, we recommend giving them to people who need them.

Here are some places to donate your old items in Kyiv. Your clothes and shoes can be given a new life.

“Kengurush”

Every week, the social hub “Kengurush” sends 2–6 tons of items to low-income families and IDPs across Ukraine. The items are delivered to pre-scheduled locations where distribution is organized among needy people.

They accept any items that are suitable for reuse. This includes children’s and adult clothing and shoes, diapers, towels, wipes, toys, children’s and adult books, hobby kits, dishes, small appliances, cereals, cookies, sugar, tea, coffee, medicines, stationery, hygiene products, cleaning agents, building materials, pillows, blankets, and other items that can be effectively used. The primary condition is that everything must be clean and in working order.

Some of the donated items are sold in “Kengurush” stores. In 2020, the organization opened its first social store, which became a sponsor for covering all the hub’s expenses. Recently, “Kengurush” opened a second store. You can purchase branded second-hand clothing and footwear at low prices in both stores while financing humanitarian aid for low-income families, IDPs, and children’s homes in Ukraine.

You can donate items to those in need in Kyiv by bringing them directly and bandending them via Nova Poshta: 251 branch, Kyiv, +380 67 458 1003, Ozkan Yevgeniya.

Address: Peace Avenue 15A; V. Lobanovskyi Ave. 4Zh

“Good Basket”

The “Good Baskets” appeared on Kyiv streets for the first time in 2018. Over 150 blue containers have been placed across the capital where anyone can leave unwanted clothing and footwear in good condition. Items must be clean and undamaged.

The organization has also opened a “Clothing Bank” in Vorzel, Kyiv region, where you can bring or take clothes.

Items collected from the boxes are given to needy people, including children’s homes and retirement homes. Valuable items are auctioned, and the money raised is used to install new containers. Clothes in poor condition are sent for safe disposal. The “Good Baskets” are open 24/7.

“Green Ray”

The public organization Green Ray, established in early 2020, has over 300 containers for collecting clothes. The clothes are then passed on to other charitable foundations that care for socially vulnerable groups.

At the start of their activities, the “Green Ray” volunteers launched the “Clean Environment” project. This project seeks to attract material (donations of clothing and footwear) and financial (monetary contributions) resources for needy institutions, including children’s homes, retirement homes, and organizations helping IDPs.

Only clean and dry items are requested for donation. High-quality clothes, footwear, and home textiles are directed to the Red Cross’s “Clothing Banks” and other organizations caring for the homeless, lonely, and low-income people. Items that can’t be worn are sent for recycling. Some collected items are sold to support the public organization’s activities. Items from containers are collected every 3–4 days.

“Diyeslovo”

“Diyeslovo” is the first bookstore in Ukraine to donate 0% of its earnings to charity. The books here are not randomly chosen but only those that have been read and donated to a good cause. People donate them to the organization, and volunteers sort them by genre, assign prices, and sell them at book events.

The funds raised from the sale will help children undergoing treatment. They will go to the charity fund “Zastava” and be used to construct a family center, “Dacha,” for children being treated for cancer.

The center is already completed, and volunteers are collecting 100 books from the “Dacha” children and their families. Books can be sent via Nova Poshta or Ukrposhta to the address “Diyeslovo,” which will be provided in a private Facebook message.

OKKO Gas Stations

Since 2014, some OKKO gas stations have had charity containers for collecting used items. You can bring clothing, footwear, and books in good condition. The OKKO hotline is: 0800501101.

International Charitable Foundation of Good Deeds

For eight years, the International Charitable Foundation of Good Deeds has been helping internally displaced people living in Kyiv and children and youth with disabilities.

Consider this organization if you don’t know where to donate things you no longer need. They accept clothing and footwear, household appliances and electronics in working condition, new and good-condition furniture in disassembled form (tables, chairs, wardrobes, computer chairs), dishes, bedding, blankets, pillows, and toys.

Territorial Centers for Social Services

You can bring clean, good-condition clothes you no longer use to the territorial social service centers. The items will be given to those affected by the war and other vulnerable groups.

The centers ask that items be brought clean after washing.
